This month we would like to celebrate and honor our dear friend and colleague Trudi Szallasi, who passed away from breast cancer in June 2008. Health e-Learning has offered a scholarship in Trudi's name since the year following her untimely death. Trudi was truly a remarkable person.

Trudi was totally committed to helping mothers and babies to have a successful and happy breastfeeding relationship. She was a volunteer breastfeeding counselor with the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA), served as a Director on the National Board and held the role of State President for 2 years. After qualifying as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Trudi began a private practice and ultimately became the President of the local branch of the Australian Lactation Consultant's Association. The year Trudi qualified as an IBCLC, she gained the highest score in the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) exam and was subsequently invited to join the IBLCE exam committee for the review of the following year's exam.

Health e-Learning, by awarding this scholarship, seeks to honor the memory of a truly remarkable and wonderful woman who made a great contribution to the mothers and babies in her care, the students of lactation whom she taught, and the lactation world.

Trudi always maintained the highest standard of practice, both clinically and ethically. We ask our recipients to challenge themselves and strive to reach these high standards and honor Trudi's name.

Our first recipient in 2009 was Jolie Black Bear from the USA. In 2010, Heidi Lam from Hong Kong received the scholarship and in 2011, Krista Gray from Egypt was the recipient. In 2013, there was a tie decision and so both Shela Hirani from Pakistan and Megha Mamulwar from India received the award. Latonia Anthony from the African American Breastfeeding Network in the USA received the 2013 award and last year in 2014, Chelsie Robertson from New Zealand was the recipient.

Reflection

They have also highlighted many challenging areas yet given us the opportunity to realise our ability to be flexible, think outside the box, and to provide hope.

Lactation, breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bodyfeeding are all inclusive to supporting a world with hope and acceptance. All of us that work in this field have at one stage or another thought that what we do can change the world, and it can. As lactation professionals, we have the ability to share knowledge with others and to guide our colleagues, communities and our governments in a direction that will benefit all.
