BE09: Other Factors Affecting the Breastfeeding Dyad is a wholly online course developed to meet the needs of Health Professionals caring for mothers and babies.
Course Aim:The aim of this course is to discuss topics that didn't easily fit into the more specific courses in the BreastEd series. These topics are as varied as the effect of lactation on libido and fertility, breastfeeding an adopted baby, breastfeeding with an acute or chronic medical condition, breastfeeding twins or more, or a baby with neurological or oro-motor disabilities, and various other topics. The effect on the baby, mother or lactation will be discussed and management aims and treatment discussed where indicated. Learning Objectives:On successful completion of this course the student will be able to - Describe the maternal nutritional requirements during lactation
- Describe the effects of lactation on a woman’s libido and fertility
- Ensure optimal management of breastfeeding despite breast surgery
- Advise women with acute or chronic diseases or infections on the impact on breastmilk and breastfeeding
- Give accurate information to breastfeeding women who are pregnant or want to tandem feed
- Advise a mother how to stimulate a breastmilk supply for an adopted baby
- Contribute to the team management of a woman with postnatal mood disorder
- Advise the mother about all issues related to breastfeeding twins or higher order multiples
- Assist the feeding management of a baby with cleft lip or palate
- Be an important contributing member of the team assisting a mother who has a baby with a neurological deficit
Course Administration:BE09 Other Factors Affecting the Breastfeeding Dyad is facilitated by an experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. There is a forum where topical issues may be raised, case studies discussed, questions posed and answered, links to additional information provided, etc. The course is available as a one month subscription commencing on the day of notification to you of your username and password.
