There are many millions of infertile couples and yet it is estimated only approximately 1.5% seek Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to form their families. Many seek adoption and others form their families with the aid of surrogacy. As a result, the family unit has expanded to include all manner of permutations which impact their experiences with breastfeeding and human lactation. The purpose of this session is to offer an opportunity for participants to explore the ever-changing landscape of ART and non-ART possibilities with respect to gender, culture and parental/non parental roles. Implications for clinical intervention and coping strategies to assist breastfeeding families will be discussed with the intent to inform clinical practice as a whole

Following this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe currently available Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and NonART possibilities for family building.
- List potential effect of ART and non ART possibilities on breastfeeding and human lactation.
- Communicate with the resultant families formed via ART/NonART with respect to gender, culture and parental/nonparental, lactation/non-lactation roles

Lenore Goldfarb, PhD, CCC, IBCLC is a Certified Canadian Counsellor, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and co-founder of the Jewish General Hospital-Goldfarb Breastfeeding Clinic (from which she retired in 2019), in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Goldfarb is president of the Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation and a director and professional development educator for the International Institute of Human Lactation, Health e-Learning.com and Step 2 Education International Inc. She is co-author together with Dr. Jack Newman of The Protocols for Induced Lactation: A Guide for Maximizing Breastmilk Production also known as The Newman-Goldfarb Protocols for Induced Lactation®.
She is the founder/moderator of www.asklenore.info, an information resource for mothers wishing to induce lactation and/or adoptive breastfeed. Dr. Goldfarb completed her Ph.D. specializing in Human Lactation and Reproductive Counselling at the Union Institute & University, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has presented on lactation topics worldwide. Married over 30 years, she has two sons born via gestational surrogacy, for whom she successfully induced lactation and breastfed via the Newman-Goldfarb Protocols for Induced Lactation®.
